Cheltenham Racecourse Car Boot Returns After 20-Year Break

After more than two decades away, the much-loved car boot sale at Cheltenham Racecourse is making a welcome return.

Once a regular fixture in the town’s calendar, the racecourse car boot was a Sunday ritual for bargain hunters, collectors and families alike. Now, 20 years on, the popular event is back, bringing with it hundreds of pitches, fresh opportunities for sellers and the promise of a proper community day out.

A Cheltenham favourite reborn

Set across the expansive grounds of Cheltenham Racecourse on Evesham Road, the revived car boot will run on Sundays from 29th March then Wednesdays from the summer, offering space for up to 400 sellers. With a large hardstanding area available, it’s designed to be accessible, easy to navigate and weather-resilient - a big plus for both traders and visitors.

Organisers say the relaunch has been driven by growing demand for affordable selling spaces and a renewed appetite for traditional, in-person markets.

In an age dominated by online marketplaces, there’s something refreshingly simple about walking a field, spotting a hidden gem and chatting face-to-face with sellers.

More than just bargains

The returning car boot isn’t just about second-hand finds. Visitors can also expect a market too, with fresh fruit and veg stalls, food vendors, coffee trucks and ice cream - making it as much about the atmosphere as the bargains.

From antiques and vintage collectibles to children’s toys, household items and clothing, the variety is part of the appeal. For families, it’s an affordable morning out. For sellers, it’s a low-cost way to declutter, start a side hustle or test a small business idea.

A boost for the local community

The comeback is being seen as a positive move for Cheltenham’s local economy, providing additional trading opportunities and bringing more footfall to the racecourse area outside of major events like The Festival.

With the cost of living still a concern for many households, car boots have seen a national resurgence. Buying pre-loved items is both budget-friendly and environmentally conscious - a win-win for shoppers.
