Purton Ship Graveyard
Purton Ship Graveyard is an awesome sight, situated on the banks of the River Severn, set back from the canal between Gloucester and Sharpness. It is a collection of old ships, that having been abandoned or reached the end of their lives, were purposely beached in order to reinforce the river banks.
Summer 2026 update
Please note, the car park at Purton is closed over summer 2026 to allow Canal and Rivers Trust to undertake maintenance.
During this time it is recommended that you start your walk in Sharpness where you can walk from the opposite direction and still enjoy the canal and ship’s graveyard.
Sharpness Viewpoint Car Park is a free public car park located on Severn Road (GL13 9UF). It provides easy access to walking along the Severn Way and the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal
There is a medium sized, free car park opposite St John's Church in Purton (GL13 9HS), park here and then head over the canal bridge and turn left. Follow the canal for around a mile and you will see a sign welcoming you to the graveyard and explaining some of the history. Head off to the right to explore the incredible shipwrecks, each with its own sign explaining the history and origin.
En route to the ships, you might be lucky enough to see the road bridges open to let a boat or two past. Also, look out for the house with an extensive garden gnome and ornament collection, raising money for local charities. My children spent ages looking at these!
There are no toilets on the walk and nowhere to buy refreshments, so be sure to pack a bag full of everything you need. There are a few small benches along the way if little legs need to stop for a drink or a snack or if you want to sit back and take in the views!
