Cheltenham Racecourse Walk

Cheltenham Racecourse is one of the most beautiful racecourses in the world. Its surrounded by gorgeous hills and countryside and on a clear day it is an unrivalled day out. So why wait for race day to take advantage of its beauty? There is a fabulous walk that brings a great mix of countryside and Cheltenham history together.

Although not buggy friendly (especially at the moment because of the mud) it is child friendly depending on how far you want the kids to walk. We start from town and walk up through Pittville Park, this is always the spot where we let the kids have a play whilst we stock up on coffees for the journey. After that it’s a bit of an uphill slog to the racecourse, but its worth it for the view.

Enter through the main entrance and walk up to the car parks. If you walk down through the North Car Park, out the other side veering right, towards the Cotswold RDA building and their beautiful horse statues.

Walking past this building on the right take a right through the gate behind this and cut diagonally across the car park area to the fields ahead. When you get to the fields, you’ll see a path to follow that leads you towards the racecourse. If you’re lucky you may see the steam of one of the nearby trains on your left-hand side!

From this point we head off the path and follow the direction of the track. Wandering over the fields with great views of the course and the sheer size of the jumps. When you get roughly opposite the stands (and you hit the houses of Prestbury) you can turn left and onto the road here. There is a fantastic pub called the Royal Oak which has a great outdoor area and lunch menu. The perfect stop!

Or if you’re feeling strong (and ready to brave the mud), there is a footpath that will follow the track the entire way around and back to the main entrance. It’s a lovely walk alongside a very sweet little stream but be warned that it is very muddy!
