Cheltenham Lido
Tucked within the beautiful surroundings of Cheltenham Lido, this much-loved destination is one of the town’s favourite spots for a day out with family and friends.
At its heart is the iconic 50-metre heated outdoor pool, drawing visitors year-round. But there’s far more to enjoy than just swimming - unwind in the sauna, stretch out in a yoga class, or add a splash of excitement by racing across the aqua inflatable.
Families are especially well catered for, with a dedicated children’s area featuring a warmer, shallow pool complete with a slide. Surrounded by grassy lawns, it’s the perfect place to lay out a picnic, soak up the sunshine, and introduce little ones to the water in a relaxed setting.
While pre-booking isn’t essential, it’s recommended during busy periods - particularly on warm, sunny days or if you’re planning to use the children’s pool.
Beyond the water, the Lido hosts a vibrant programme of events throughout the season. From atmospheric sunset and midnight swims to outdoor cinema nights, theatre performances, and the much-anticipated annual Dog Swim each October, there’s always something unique happening.
Opened in 1935, the Lido quickly became a standout attraction as one of the largest pools in the West Midlands - and notably, one of the UK’s few heated outdoor pools at the time. Its enduring popularity led to significant restoration efforts in 2006, supported by community fundraising and the Heritage Lottery Fund, recognising its importance as a nationally significant heritage site.
Today, with a newly secured 100-year lease between Cheltenham Borough Council and the charity that operates it, the future of this cherished landmark is brighter than ever - ensuring it remains a place for generations to enjoy.
