Pumpkin picking without paying an entrance fee? Elm Farm in Elmore, near Gloucester, is keeping things simple this Halloween. Head into the fields, choose your pumpkins and pay for what you pick, with no advance booking needed.

There's a choice of pumpkins in different shapes and sizes, from small ones for decorating to some seriously hefty specimens. Whether you're after a carving pumpkin or planning a doorstep display, you can have a proper rummage around the patch to find your favourite.

It's a lovely straightforward option for an autumn outing, particularly if you don't fancy paying admission just to buy a pumpkin. Bring your wellies, especially after rain, and make the most of the free entry.

Elm Farm also has parking available. If you're bringing the dog, the farm's stated policy is that dogs can be on leads in the photo and marquee area, but aren't allowed in the pumpkin fields.

And if pumpkin picking has worked up an appetite, Wholly Gelato is just down the road for an ice cream or coffee afterwards. October ice cream? Absolutely.
