Pilley Bridge Nature Reserve

Pilley Bridge Nature Reserve is a proper hidden gem! Street parking is available on Mead Road (off Naunton Lane and Old Bath Road) then head down the public footpath. It’s only a short walk, but it’s packed with interest for little ones.

With tall trees either side the area is shady and creates the perfect urban nature reserve with  woodland walks, wildlife spotting and a quiet escape from busy town life.

There are stones to throw into the water, sticks to float on top of the water and on dry days, there’s a further section of woodland to explore beyond the pond (avoid on wet days as the mud is SO deep)!" Pilley Bridge Nature Reserve is a hidden green space tucked away in the southern part of Cheltenham. Once part of the old Great Western Railway line between Cheltenham and Banbury, the route was transformed into a kilometre-long nature reserve following the railway’s closure in the 1960s.

Today, the reserve is a peaceful place to walk, explore and enjoy wildlife close to the town centre.

The reserve stretches from behind Travis Perkins on Mead Road, beneath Pilley Bridge on Old Bath Road and almost as far as Sandy Lane, offering a surprising mix of habitats within a relatively small area.

Woodland, Meadow and Pond Habitats

The western side of the reserve features woodland edge habitats formed by the old railway embankments. Holly, hawthorn and seasonal wildflowers provide colour and interest throughout the year.

The eastern side opens into a meadow area leading towards a pond fed by natural springs. During warmer months, the meadow attracts butterflies, dragonflies and damselflies, making it a lovely place for nature spotting.

The reserve is home to a variety of wildlife including foxes, badgers and deer, while peregrine falcons have also been spotted hunting in the area.

Community Orchard

In 2012, the Friends of Pilley Bridge helped create a community orchard within the reserve, adding to the fruit trees already growing on site and helping support local biodiversity.

Pilley Bridge Nature Reserve is ideal for gentle family walks, quiet moments in nature and introducing children to local wildlife habitats.

Although located within an urban area, the reserve feels surprisingly calm and secluded, making it a lovely spot for a slower-paced outdoor visit.

Site Management

The reserve is managed by Cheltenham Borough Council’s Community Ranger Service alongside the Friends of Pilley Bridge. Together they carry out regular conservation work to help protect and improve the habitats on site.
